Steel Dynamics Yet to Decide on the Site for New $1.8B Flat Roll Steel Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI) has not yet made a final decision on where its new flat roll steel mill will be located. The company had announced plans to build a new $1.8 billion flat roll steel mill in the southwest U.S. According to SDI, several potential locations including San Patricio County are under consideration.

During a meet and greet with SDI representatives held at San Patricio County Civic Center in Sinton , CEO Mark Millett said that the company is still considering several sites in Louisiana and Texas. Meantime, over 200 people who assembled at the meeting welcomed SDI to San Antonio County to be part of Texas and part of their family. They expressed the hope that, the town will benefit from the jobs and possible growth that could come as a result of the proposed SDI mill.

In an effort to bring SDI into San Patricio County, the Commissioners had voted to create nearly 2,500 acres of land near Sinton as a reinvestment zone, to be offered as site for the proposed steel mill project. In addition, the members of the County Commissioners Court approved a 10-year tax abatement agreement. Also, an application for Chapter 313 tax abatements has been submitted to the Texas Comptroller's Office.

SDI plans to begin construction of the new mill in 2020, after finalization of the location at the earliest. The plant is expected to begin operational by 2021.
