CEA donates funds in support of Las Vegas sustainability projects

WASHINGTON (Scrap Monster): On the occasion of 2014 International CES which opens in Las Vegas today, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has announced donations to support sustainability projects by local organizations. The association will donate funds to University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ (UNLV) DesertSol solar house and to Springs Preserve- the cultural organization.

The DesertSol solar house, created by UNLV, was the second-place winner, and first among U.S. organizations, at the 2013 U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Solar Decathlon. CEA aims to expand the project by educating not only the students but also the public living in Southern Nevada region. The funds allotted will be utilized towards educating the general public about sustainable living and will pave way for further expansion of the DesertSol initiative.

DesertSol will be transported to the Springs Preserve where it will act as a living classroom for the next year, reporting data back to UNLV students and faculty. The donation to Springs Preserve will help Desert Sol’s movement to the new location.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978, the Springs Preserve is a 180-acre cultural institution designed to commemorate Las Vegas' dynamic history and to provide a vision for a sustainable future. The Preserve features museums, galleries, outdoor events, colorful botanical gardens and an interpretive trail system through a scenic wetland habitat and promotes implementation of green living practices and technologies.
