Southern Region Propels Surge in U.S. Raw Steel Output

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The weekly domestic raw steel production data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) indicated significant surge during the week ended May 29, 2021. The weekly production climbed higher significantly by 50.1% over the same week a year before.

The domestic raw steel output by U.S. mills totalled 1.836 million net tons (NT) at a capability utilization rate of 81.5%. The production had totalled only 1.223 million NT at a capacity utilization rate of 54.6% during the same period a year before. Meantime, the production during the week inched higher marginally by 2.4% when compared with the production of 1.793 million NT at a capability utilization rate of 79.0% during the previous week.

U.S. Steel Imports Spiked in April

The adjusted year-to-date raw steel production totalled 35.913 million NT through the week ended May 29, 2021. The mills in the country reported capability utilization rate of 78.1% during this period. The production till date has increased by 9.5%, compared to 32.811 million NT during the same period last year. The capability utilization rates were up from 69.9% a year before.

The mills in the Southern region accounted for over 43% of the total weekly raw steel production by the country. The regional output totalled 793,000 NT. The production (in thousand net tons) by the other regions was as follows: North East-147, Midwest-187, Great Lakes-635 and Western-74.
