SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): European packaging major Smurfit Kappa was named as a founding member of the new industry alliance aimed at promoting the use of paper-based packaging solutions. The 4evergreen forum is led by the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI).
Smurfit Kappa will cooperate with leading brand owners and packaging companies to create awareness about the benefits of fibre-based packaging products. The new alliance will press for EU legislation in support of recyclable product design. Further, it will focus on providing efficient collection systems and improved recycling infrastructure. The other members of the alliance include Nestle, Danone and Mars.

The alliance will act as a force to speed up the development of alternative packaging materials, including fibre-based packaging. There is good synergy between 4evergreen forum’s goals and the company’s Better Planet Packaging initiative, which itself aims to reduce packaging waste by creating more sustainable packaging.
