Russian Government Declared Expansion of Lumber Export Restrictions

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The higher duty rates for export of individual kinds of lumber from Russia have come into effect from yesterday. The move is aimed at preventing export of raw wood disguised as lumber and boosting the exports of products with high added value. The above said duties will be applicable only for exports outside the Eurasian Economic Union.

The Russian government had earlier introduced restrictions for timber export. The higher rates for export of individual kinds of lumber will be in effect for a period of one year from 2nd January to 31st December, 2021. The rates will be applicable for export of individual kinds of lumber with moisture over 22% and thickness and width over 10 cm.

The rate set for softwood is 200 euro per cubic meter, whereas that for precious hardwood ranges from 250 to 370 euro per cubic meter, said the Russian Ministry of Industry. Meantime, the rate for oak lumber varies from at least 13 and 15 euro per cubic meter and at least 50 euro per cubic meter for beechwood and ash.

Effective 1st January, the availability of just two railway border crossings will result in savings of up to 6 million cubic metres of softwood in the country for processing by domestic mills said Viktor Evtukhov, Deputy Minister of Industry.
