  • Q3 earnings forecast: Loss of approximately $0.73 per share, compared with a $0.78 loss in Q2.
  • Revenue forecast: Approximately $1.42 billion, slightly below Q2 sales of $1.434 billion.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Canadian wood products producer West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. is preparing to release its third-quarter 2026 financial results on Wednesday, October 28, with investors looking for signs of improving profitability amid challenging North American lumber markets.

Analysts tracked by MarketBeat expect a loss of approximately $0.73 per share on revenue of $1.42 billion. That compares with a second-quarter loss of $0.78 per share and sales of $1.434 billion.

The forecast also represents a substantial improvement from the $2.63-per-share loss reported in the third quarter of 2025, although analyst estimates remain subject to revision.

Lumber Prices and Mill Productivity Under Scrutiny

West Fraser operates more than 50 facilities across North America and Europe, producing lumber, oriented strand board (OSB), plywood and other engineered wood products.

The company's performance remains closely tied to residential construction, renovation activity and commodity wood-product prices.

Operational improvements could help offset some of those challenges. During the second quarter, production at West Fraser's modernized Henderson, Texas, sawmill more than doubled from the previous quarter.

Canadian lumber output also increased as the Blue Ridge, Alberta, facility returned to normal operating levels.

Investors will be watching whether higher production volumes and improved mill efficiency have translated into stronger earnings, particularly as the company continues to manage costs and U.S. softwood lumber duties.

ScrapMonster Edge: Operating Recovery Has Started, but Profitability Remains Challenged

West Fraser's second-quarter results showed a meaningful operating improvement despite continued net losses.

Adjusted EBITDA increased to $59 million in Q2, compared with a $66 million loss in Q1, a positive swing of $125 million.

However, the company still reported a $61 million net loss for the quarter.

Why it matters: The upcoming results will help determine whether improved sawmill productivity is translating into sustained operating earnings. For lumber producers and suppliers, realized selling prices, shipment volumes and mill utilization will provide important evidence of market conditions beyond the headline earnings figure.

Housing Demand and Trade Costs Remain Key Challenges

North American housing activity remains an important demand driver for West Fraser's lumber and engineered wood products.

Although lumber prices have shown periods of stabilization, demand remains sensitive to construction activity, financing costs and builder confidence.

U.S. duties and tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber are another factor affecting costs and competitiveness.

West Fraser will release its third-quarter results on October 28, followed by a management conference call on October 29 at 11 a.m. Eastern Time.

The report will provide a clearer indication of whether the company's operating improvements are sufficient to support a sustained recovery heading into 2027.
