SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Canada-based forestry company Interfor has announced the indefinite curtailment of operations at its Nairn Centre and Gogama sawmills in Ontario, citing weak market conditions, trade pressures, and rising operational costs.

In a statement issued on April 23, the company confirmed there is currently no timeline for restarting the facilities. The Nairn Centre site, located near Sudbury, will continue limited operations to process existing log inventory. The sawmill is expected to run until early to mid-June, while the planer may operate through late June, subject to confirmation.

The move is expected to impact employees and surrounding communities, although the company has not disclosed the number of workers affected. Interfor stated it is working closely with stakeholders during the transition.

The company acquired the Nairn Centre and Gogama facilities in 2022 through a $490 million deal involving EACOM Timber Corp., expanding its footprint across Ontario and Quebec. However, ongoing challenges—including U.S. softwood lumber duties and additional tariffs—have continued to pressure profitability.

Interfor had previously reduced production and shut down other operations, including Ear Falls, as part of broader cost-control measures. The company is set to release its Q1 financial results on May 14.
