Rio Tinto Partners with Shougang Group to Explore Steel Decarbonisation Solutions

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Mining and metals giant Rio Tinto announced that it has reached an agreement with China-based leading steel producer Shougang Group to explore solutions that deliver decarbonisation in the steel industry.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two parties calls for promotion of research, design and implementation of low-carbon solutions for the steel value chain. The focus area of the partnership include low-carbon sintering technology, blast furnace (BF) and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) optimisation, and carbon capture and utilisation (CCU).

The partnership underlines Rio Tinto’s strategic commitment to invest in technologies that could reduce carbon intensity in steelmaking industry. It builds on the nearly three-decade old relationship between the two companies as trade and technical partners.

Alf Barrios, Chief Commercial Officer, Rio Tinto noted that it is delighted to be able to extend our partnership with Shougang to jointly work towards our shared vision of a ‘greener’ steel value chain. Meantime, Wang Jianwei, Vice President of Shougang Group said that the collaboration is a positive move for both sides to cooperate and promote low-carbon technology innovation.
