President Trump’s Steel and Aluminum Tariffs Draw Support from Rulli

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Earlier this month, President Trump signed an executive order on steel tariffs.

Under the new order, the U.S. would “close existing loopholes and exceptions” to store a 25% tariff on steel imports, and increase the tariff on aluminum imports to 25% as well.

Mr. Trump says the order is intended to protect the U.S. steel and aluminum industries, which he says have been harmed by unfair trade practices over the years.

This comes in the wake of President Biden blocking the sale of the company U.S. Steel to Japan’s Nippon Steel.

We spoke to Ohio Representative Michael Rulli, who says he supports Mr. Trump’s tariff policy.

“If you charge us 10%, you better make sure we’re gonna charge you 10%. And I think that gives U.S. Steel a lifeline to succeed in America, and I encourage companies to buy off U.S. Steel. Keep it all within the U.S.; America first.”-Rep. Michael Rulli, R-OH

Rulli believes that if we don’t use tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum imports, we could permanently lose the steel industry.

Though the sale of U.S. Steel to Nippon Steel was blocked, there are active negotiations for Nippon to invest in the company moving forward.
