UNDP Launches Caspian Sea Initiative to Combat Plastic Pollution

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The United Nations Development Programme, in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme and regional partners, has officially launched a new project aimed at tackling marine litter and plastic pollution in the Caspian Sea. The initiative was marked by an inception seminar held in Turkmenistan, bringing together government officials, scientists, and civil society representatives.
The project, titled “Addressing Marine Litter and Marine Plastics – A Systemic Approach in the Caspian Sea,” focuses on reducing pollution through improved waste management policies, enhanced monitoring systems, and stronger regional cooperation under the Tehran Convention framework.
According to Farhat Orunov, the initiative adopts a comprehensive strategy that includes data collection on pollution sources, regulatory improvements, promotion of circular economy practices, and increased community participation, including women and businesses.
Funded by the Russian Federation, the project will be implemented across Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan through October 2027. It will prioritize addressing land-based pollution sources and align with existing regional environmental frameworks.
The initiative highlights growing regional commitment to safeguarding the Caspian Sea’s ecosystem through coordinated, long-term action.
