Goodwill Discontinuing Plastic Bag Use in Arkansas Stores to Help Reduce Waste

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Goodwill Industries of Arkansas recently announced it would discontinue the use of single-use plastic bags in all stores across the state.

The nonprofit said in a social media post that the change would begin on September 3 and it’s an effort to help reduce waste.

“We’re thrilled to take this crucial step towards a greener future not only in Arkansas but for our planet,” GIA President and CEO Brian Marsh said in a news release. “Our customers have always been at the heart of our mission, and now they’ll play an even more vital role in our sustainability efforts. By utilizing reusable bags, they become true partners in our journey to protect the environment.”

Goodwill said customers can also bring in their own reusable bags or purchase a reusable bag at checkout.

“This groundbreaking initiative underscores Goodwill’s longstanding commitment to the sustainability, safety, and beauty of our planet,” the release said. “By eliminating nearly 3.5 million single-use plastic bags per year, which often end up in landfills or as litter, Goodwill aims to significantly reduce waste, prevent litter, beautify communities, and safeguard wildlife.” 

Goodwill said it is encouraging customers to bring in their own reusable bags ahead of September 3 to help make a smooth transition.
