CalRecycle Aims to Cut Plastic Waste by Setting Recycling Standards for Companies

Officials say packaging is one of the major contributors to climate and trash pollution.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Part of the new year is new laws going into effect in California.

SB 54 shifts the responsibility for plastic pollution from the consumer to the producers. CalRecycle is working on setting responsibilities for industries to cut waste and recycle more.

It's part of the goal to cut single-use plastic for packaging and food service ware by 25% within eight years.

Officials say packaging is one of the major contributors to climate and trash pollution.

"California is setting clear standards to cut waste and recycle single-use products to lower pollution, while growing innovative companies and new jobs," CalRecycle Director Rachel Machi Wagoner told KCRA 3. "Building a circular economy that reuses products that are built to last instead of turning raw materials into trash is a roadmap to California's waste-free future."
