SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pittsburgh-based United States Steel Corporation (U.S. Steel) announced publication of 2019 Sustainability Report. It provides details on accomplishments made by the company in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues.
David B. Burritt, President and Chief Executive Officer, U. S. Steel reiterated that ESG and sustainability-focused initiatives continue to be the topmost priorities of the company. It has been successful in integrating these priorities with its strategy of ‘best of both’ integrated and mini mill technologies. The company will continue to focus on safety, efficiency, environmental stewardship and innovation.

U.S. Steel reported significant progress towards its earlier set goals on sustainability-related issues. The company reported Days Away from Work Rate of 0.10 for the previous year, which is almost 80% better than the Bureau of Labor Statistics for Iron and Steel rate of 0.70. The energy-efficiency initiatives at its integrated mill facilities have already helped the company achieve significant reduction in GHG emissions. U.S. Steel declared commitment to reduce its global GHG emissions intensity by 20% by 2030, upon comparison with 2018 levels.
The company recycled an average of approximately 3 million tons of scrap per year in its steelmaking processes.
