The new initiative, managed by UK-based Co-cre8, will boost the recycling rate of wood-fiber in paper cups, by significantly increasing the collection infrastructure. The used paper cups will be collected to be regenerated into valuable recycled raw material. Initially, collection bins will be made available in restaurants, cafés, office buildings and transport hubs in the Brussels and Amsterdam metropolitan areas. It targets to recycle around 500,000 paper cups in the first two years.

Hannu Kasurinen, EVP, Stora Enso Packaging Materials division noted that its production sites, including Langerbrugge in Belgium, can process and recycle paper cups into new fiber-based products. The new partnership will provide a platform to collect and capture the value of paper cup fibers on an industrial scale, Kasurinen said.
