SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Smurfit Westrock has initiated a consultation process that could lead to the closure of its SSK paper mill in Birmingham, UK, along with four converting facilities across the UK and the Netherlands. The move reflects mounting market pressures and the company’s strategy to streamline operations and enhance long-term competitiveness.
The Birmingham mill currently produces around 200,000 tonnes per year of fluting and liner used in corrugated packaging. If the closure proceeds, production will be redistributed across Smurfit Westrock’s European network, ensuring continued supply to customers while optimizing efficiency.
The consultation, set to begin on May 15 and run for six weeks, will determine the future of the site. Approximately 130 employees could be affected, with the company stating it will provide support measures, including redeployment opportunities and career assistance.
CEO Pim Wareman described the review as a necessary step to align operations with current market realities.
Separately, Smurfit Westrock reported Q1 2026 net sales of $7.7 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $1.07 billion, highlighting stable financial performance despite industry headwinds.
