SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Oslo, Norway-based Norske Skog announced major conversion projects at its mills in France and Austria, which are expected to commence during the second half of the current year.
The company will convert two newsprint paper machines at Golbey, France, and Bruck an der Mur, Austria mills into recycled-content containerboard production. The proposed conversion projects will add nearly 765,000 metric tons of containerboard capacity. At the same time, the project will reduce the company’s newsprint capacity to 360,000 metric tons, the press release noted.

John Chiang, Chairman of the Board, Norske Skog noted that the project is a milestone in the company’s strategy to become a leading European packaging producer. This is an important step in the company’s evolution process, as it looks to enhance long-term value for all of its shareholders, he added.
A total of approximately $418 million will be invested on the projects over a period of 18 months. A sum of nearly $299 million will be invested at the Golbey mill in France to convert paper machine PM1 to 555,000 metric tons of recycled-content containerboard capacity. Also, $107 million will be invested at the Bruck mill in Austria towards conversion of PM3 to 210,000 metric tons of containerboard capacity.
