ArcelorMittal Announced Supply of Recycled Steel to Underground Railway Project

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ArcelorMittal has supplied recycled and renewably produced steel reinforcing bars to the flagship underground railway line project in Hamburg- the Hamburger U5.

The new underground railway line connects the Hanseatic city with the outer districts in the east and west with the city centre. This infrastructure project is unique in the sense that it aims not only to reduce carbon dioxide emissions on site during the construction process, but also to ensure that the project takes into consideration the entire supply chain of building materials.

According to a press statement from the company, its "XCarb® – recycled and renewably produced" reinforcing steel is perfect for this landmark project because it has a far smaller carbon footprint. When compared to traditional steel manufacturing in blast furnaces, the 1,100 tons of XCarb® rebar needed for the project will result in carbon reductions of almost 88%.

During the building phase, the U5 project aims to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 70%. With the utilization of recycled steel and green electricity in the production process, ArcelorMittal's steel products will be crucial in assisting the project in reaching its stated carbon reduction goals.
