Paper Excellence Canada Mill Production Impacted by Malware Infiltration

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The infiltration of malware has impacted production at B.C. paper mills. The IT systems at three Paper Excellence Canada paper mills were infiltrated by malware, forcing the mills to operate the machines in manual mode.

The company employees discovered last week that the online communications and software systems are not functioning normally. The attack made it impossible for employees to communicate by email. The software system used by the company for filing paper orders at its Crofton, Port Alberni and Powell River mills stopped functioning. According to Graham Kissack, vice-president of environment, health and safety and communications at Paper Excellence, the company has been running machines in manual mode. The customers have been already informed of a possible delay in product deliveries, he said. The company aims to get back to full production at the earliest and revamp the system to prevent future attacks by hackers.

Meantime, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has initiated an investigation into the matter.
