SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The most recent data published by the U.S. Census Bureau suggests considerable decline in exports of paper and paperboard scrap during the initial three-month period in 2018. The U.S imports of paper and paperboard scrap too recorded notable decline during the first quarter of 2018.

The exports of paper and paperboard scrap by the U.S. totaled $750.11 million through March this year. The exports totaled $261.68 million in March 2018 alone. The country’s exports had totaled $3.18 billion during the full year 2017.

During the first quarter of 2018, the top five foreign markets for U.S exports were China, India, Mexico, Canada and South Korea. Altogether, these five countries took delivery of nearly 83% of all paper and paperboard scrap exports by the U.S. during Jan-Mar ’18.

The top export market through March this year was China. The exports to China totaled $301.86 million, accounting for almost 40% of all U.S. shipments. However, the exports were down significantly by almost 40% when compared with the previous year. Nearly one-fifth of the U.S. exports were directed to India. The country’s imports were worth $151.22 million during Q1 2018. The other major export markets were Mexico ($88.7 million), Canada ($41.52 million) and South Korea ($37.87 million).
