OceanaGold To Finalize Haile Gold Mine Permitting Process

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Mid-tier gold mining company OceanaGold announced that it has moved closer to completing the permitting process for its Haile underground gold mine located in Kershaw, South Carolina.

According to company announcement, the United States Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) published the supplementary environmental impact statement (SEIS) for the Haile gold mine on Friday. It is now in a 30-day public comment period, which will be followed by a 15-day review period before the release of the final SEIS record of decision (ROD). The finalization of the ROD will lead to issuance of associated permits by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

OceanaGold hoped that the comment period and the review period are unlikely to result in changes to the SEIS.

Gerard Bond, president and CEO of OceanaGold noted that the publishing of the SEIS is an important step towards finalizing the permitting process. The development of the mine would boost Haile’s gold production and help unlock the full value of Haile. The underground development is expected to augment Haile’s gold production by up to 100,000 oz per year.

Incidentally, the mine has an estimated mine life of 12 years and a proven reserve base of 2.84 million oz. of gold. It had produced 189,975 oz. of gold last year.
