Nucor’s Missouri Micro Mill to be the First U.S. Steel Plant to Run on Wind Energy

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nucor Corporation’s to-be-opened micro mill in Sedalia, Missouri is likely to be the first steel plant in the entire U.S. region to run on wind energy. This in turn is expected to reduce carbon footprints at the plant.

The company had entered into an agreement with Kansas City, Missouri-headquartered local electric utility Evergy on a 75 megawatt power purchase deal. As per sources, Evergy is currently developing wind resources that will be part of the electric grid serving the Nucor Sedalia steel plant. The energy produced from the new wind farm will power the plant’s electric arc furnaces.

In fact, the competitive price offered by Evergy, helped in Nucor selecting Missouri as the site for the new steel plant, ahead of wind-rich states like Nebraska and Kansas. Incidentally, the Missouri state law allows utilities to offer discounted electric rates for steel and aluminium producers with massive energy requirements. Meantime, Evergy is said to be in efforts to attract potential manufacturing companies to set up their plants in the state.

The wind-powered facility will help Nucor to deliver notable improvement to energy efficiency and significant decline in environmental impact.

The Missouri plant is expected to employ around 250 people. The construction phase has already generated more than 500 jobs.

Recently, Xcel Energy and Lightsource, BP had entered into an agreement to develop a 240MW solar power facility in Pueblo, Colorado to power the EVRAZ North America Rocky Mountain Steel facility.
