Nucor to Invest in Capacity Upgrades at Darlington Steel Bar Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nucor Corporation announced its decision to make investments in its steel mill in Darlington, South Carolina, aimed at upgrading its capabilities. The capital investment at the company’s first steel mill will add vacuum degassing to its capabilities, thereby enabling the mill in production of bar products that meet most stringent industry quality specifications. The upgraded system is expected to become operational in late 2020. The cost of the upgrades was not disclosed.

John Ferriola, Chairman, CEO and President of Nucor Corporation noted that the strategic investment complements Nucor’s existing bar mills in Norfolk, Nebraska, Memphis, Tennessee, and Wallingford, Connecticut. It will position the company to better serve its customers in the Southeastern U.S. Also, it will enable the company to support the rising demand for high-quality bar products from automotive and specialty steel sectors, he added. The company anticipates 25% surge in steel deliveries to auto market in 2019.

The upgrade is not expected to generate additional employment at Nucor Steel South Carolina, which currently offers approximately 450 jobs. The quantity of products from the mill will also see little change. However, the investment is expected to significantly improve the quality of steel products from the mill.

Incidentally, Nucor Steel South Carolina is the first steel mill built by Nucor. The facility is all set to host an event to celebrate its 50th year of operation.
