Nucor Announced Modernization of Indiana Steel Sheet Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nucor Corporation announced that its board of directors has approved an investment of $290 million towards expanding production capabilities of its Crawfordsville, Indiana steel sheet mill.

The proposed investment will modernize the plant by adding a construction grade continuous galvanizing line and a prepaint line. The project is expected to be completed within two years, subject to necessary regulatory approvals and permits. Also, the modernization project is expected to create 80 jobs.

The construction grade continuous galvanizing line will have a capacity of 300,000 tons per year, whereas the prepaint line will have an annual capacity of 250,000 tons per year, said the company press release. The investment will further expand the company’s existing galvanizing and prepaint capabilities. The company had recently added continuous galvanizing lines at its sheet mills in Arkansas and Kentucky. In addition, it had acquired a prepaint line at its Arkansas sheet mill.

Rex Query, Executive Vice President of Sheet and Tubular Products for Nucor Corporation said that the investment will help the company to grow its profitability in the Midwest construction region and expand its prepaint footprint. The investment is part of the strategy to grow its core steel businesses and expand its portfolio of value-added products, he added.
