Nucor Announced Construction of New Lexington Rebar Micro Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nucor Corporation announced its decision to build a new rebar micro mill in Lexington, North Carolina. This will be the company’s third rebar micro mill, following the existing mills in Missouri and Florida.

According to company press release, the mill will be constructed at an expense of around $350 million. The construction may take approximately two years, during which around 500 temporary jobs will be created. Upon full operation, the mill will create nearly 200 full-time jobs. The proposed mill will have an annual production capacity of around 430,000 tons. The construction is subject to receipt of necessary permit and regulatory approvals.

Leon Topalian, President & Chief Executive Officer of Nucor said that the company is highly excited to grow its steel business in the home state of North Carolina. The new federal spending for infrastructure will further boost demand for rebar in the fastest growing corridor between Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. Nucor Steel Lexington will produce steel with nearly 100% recycled content, he added.

The company thanked Governor Roy Cooper, Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders and other state officials, Davidson County, the City of Lexington and the City of Thomasville for their help and support of the project.

Nucor has a total of 15 bar mills strategically located across the U.S. The company has an estimated steel bar production capacity of approximately 9.56 million tons per year.
