North America’s Crude Steel Production Slumped Last Year

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The yearly steel production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) indicates modest decline in steel output by North American countries.

The North American crude steel production totalled 119.962 million tonnes (Mt) in 2019, marginally down by 0.8% when matched with the year before. The regional steel production had totalled 120.880 Mt in 2018.

The leading steel producer in the region was the U.S. The country’s 2019 production at 87.595 Mt was marginally higher from 86.607 Mt in 2018. The country accounted for more than 73% of the total North American production. In second and third place were Mexico and Canada with yearly outputs totalling 18.595 Mt and 12.790 Mt respectively. The outputs by these countries were down by 8.0% and 4.9% respectively on 2018.

The regional steel output totalled 10.002 Mt in December last year. This compares with the output of 10.126 Mt in Dec ’18. The top three producers were the U.S. (7.457 Mt), Mexico (1.495 Mt) and Canada (985,000 tonnes). The Mexican output declined the most, falling by 7.3% year-on-year. The U.S. output fell marginally by 0.3%, whereas the Canadian production edged higher by 0.4%.
