North American Recovered Fibre Market Weakened in Recent Months

The recovered paper prices had remained stable for several months.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest World Mirror on Recovered Paper published by the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) stated that the North American recovered fibre market softened during recent months.

The overall situation of the paper industry does not appear to be good, and the forecast does not provide much hope, according to Myles Cohen, a board member of Vipa USA Inc. According to him, the prices will probably continue to decline over the coming months, which will make both buyers and sellers more anxious.

For several months, the prices of the recovered paper had not changed. However, prices have decreased in nearly every region as a result of the North American market's downturn in May and June, particularly for mixed paper and old corrugated containers (OCC). There was also a decrease in the cost of premium grades, such as sorted office paper. Due to low demand, domestic mills are reported to be rescinding their orders, which raises recovered fiber stocks.

Some large paper mills, like Georgia-Pacific, have permanently shut down. New mills or mills that have been revived have partially offset these losses. According to the BIR quarterly report, these additional capabilities are not anticipated to fully compensate for the extensive closures.
