North American Crude Steel Production Dipped

The U.S. continued to be the largest producer in the region.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The monthly steel production statistics for the month of January 2020, published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) indicates modest decline in steel output by North American countries.

The North American crude steel production totalled 10.227 million tonnes (Mt) in Jan ‘20, lower by 1.4% when matched with the year before. The regional steel production had totalled 10.373 Mt in January 2019.

The U.S. continued to be the largest producer in the region. The US output recorded marginal increase by 2.5% year-on-year from 7.518 Mt to 7.707 Mt. The country accounted for over 75% of the total regional output. In second place was Mexico with total production of 1.375 Mt during the month. The Mexican output dropped significantly by 15.9% when compared with the year before. The output had totalled 1.636 Mt in January last year. The third largest producer was Canada, whose output was 1.090 Mt in January 2020. This compares with 1.166 Mt of crude steel produced in the same month a year before. The production witnessed 6.5% year-on-year decline.

The other major producers along with their output in tonnes are as follows: Guatemala (25,000), Cuba (20,000) and El Salvador (10,000).
