North American Crude Steel Output Witnessed Substantial Dip

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) indicates that crude steel poduction by the North American region declined substantially during September this year.

The North American crude steel production totalled 7.929 million tonnes (Mt) during the month, down by 17.4% when matched with the production during the corresponding month in 2019. The regional production had totalled 9.595 Mt in September 2019.

All countries in the region reported year-on-year production decline. The leading crude steel producer during the month was the US. The country produced 5.709 Mt of crude steel, significantly lower by 17.4% when matched with the production of 7.004 Mt during September 2019. Mexico continued to remain as the second largest producer in the region. The country’s output too registered 3.9% year-on-year decline during the month. The output totalled 1.400 Mt as against the output of 1.456 Mt in Sep ‘19. In third place was Canada with total production of 780,000 tonnes. The Canadian production posted year-on-year decline by 27.6%.

The output by El Salvador has declined by 47.6% from around 10,000 tonnes to nearly 5,000 tonnes. The Cuban crude steel production too posted decline during the month. The country produced 15,000 tonnes, down by almost 28% when compared with the production of 21,000 tonnes recorded during September last year. Meantime, the production by Guatemala declined from 27,000 tonnes to 20,000 tonnes.
