North American Crude Steel Output Slumped 3%

The combined regional steel production during the initial eight months of the current year totalled80.928 Mt, higher by 0.8% upon comparison with the output of 80.262 Mt during the corresponding eight-month period a year before.

North American Crude Steel Output Slumped 3%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The August 2019 crude steel production data published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) indicates notable decline in North American regional output. The region’s output slumped by 3.1% over the previous year to total 10.022 million tonnes (Mt). It must be noted that North American production had totalled 10.343 Mt in August last year.

The U.S., the largest crude steel producer in the region saw its output rising marginally by 0.3%. The production totalled 7.497 Mt, accounting for almost three-fourths of the total regional output.

Mexico continued to be the second largest producer, despite recording sharp decline in output. The country’s output slipped by over 15% year-on-year. The Mexican production totalled around 1.410 Mt during the month.

In third place was Canada with total production of 1.060 Mt. The Canadian crude steel output dropped by 8% over the previous year.

The other key steel producers in the region along with their estimated steel output during the month were as follows: Guatemala (25,000 tonnes), Cuba (20,000 tonnes) and El Salvador (10,000 tonnes).
