The new production permit allows for increase in production volume for pulp by around 20% and that for kraft paper by 10%.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nordic Paper made the decision to authorize up to SEK 450 million in environmental expenditures at the Swedish pulp and paper factory in Backhammar. To increase the mill's production volume, a new production permit must be obtained, which requires these expenditures.
The water-related investments listed above will be implemented during the course of the three-year period from 2025 to 2027. At the moment, the mill gets the majority of its water needs from Lake Vanern via a conduit. The cleaned effluent water is returned to the lake via the Visman stream.
A second pipe, about 12 kilometers long, will be installed as part of the investment to return the plant's cleansed wastewater water to Lake Vanern. In addition to these expenditures, the mill will cut off its connection to the Visman stream.
The new production permit permits a 10% increase in kraft paper production and a 20% increase in pulp production.
Regarding the development, it is expected that the announced investments will open up future chances. Its restoration to natural circumstances will be aided by the separation from the Visman stream. He noted that the Backhammar mill is an effective mill with a functional effluent treatment plant.
