Nippon Steel Implements Production Cuts at Kimitsu Area Blast Furnace

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Japanese steelmaker Nippon Steel announced plan to cut output in Kimitsu area. This is the company’s third blast furnace to announce production from automotive cut over the past two months. The move follows reduced demand for steel products industry.

The company press release noted that output at the No. 2 blast furnace of its East Nippon Works will be lowered from mid-May this year. The furnace produces flat as well as long steel products, which are primarily supplied to domestic and overseas automotive industry. Earlier in April this year, the company had decided to lower output at its No. 1 blast furnace at the Kashima area of its East Nippon Works and the No. 1 blast furnace at its Kansai Works in Wakayama.

The company’s decision to announce further output cuts comes in the wake of government’s decision to extend the state of emergency on account of COVID-spread to the entire country until 6th May. Nippon Steel will continue to respond to changes in domestic and overseas steel demand situation and announce prompt and effective adjustments to its production schedule, the press release said.
