Approximately 2.4 million pellets have been recovered from Texas Gulf beaches since 2018, it said.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading non-profits Environment America and Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) has unveiled an interactive map that identifies facilities in Texas that produce micropellets and other pre-production microplastics, which in turn are used to manufacture larger plastic items.
Based on data provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the researchers concluded that at least 141 total facilities across at least 27 states produce such microplastics. Alarmingly, at least 35 of such facilities are in Texas. Also, there are additional 193 facilities across the country that are being identified as potential producers of microplastics.

The report noted that pre-production microplastics can come in several different forms including powder, flake and pellet. The most common form is plastic pellets which are otherwise known as nurdles. They are easily spilled due to their small size and lightweight properties. Approximately 2.4 million pellets have been recovered from Texas Gulf beaches since 2018, it said.
Luke Metzger, Environment Texas Executive Director noted that plastic pellets, though are tiny, pose a huge threat to wildlife. He urged lawmakers to take necessary action to prevent facilities from dumping or spilling pellets into waterways.
