MTN Launched E-Waste Campaign in Ivory Coast

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): MTN Côte d’Ivoire- the Ivory Coast subsidiary of the mobile phone operator MTN announced launch of the third edition of e-waste collection and recycling campaign in the capital city of Abidjan. The initiative aims to raise awareness among individuals and motivate companies in Ivory Coast to promote responsible management of electronic waste.

As part of the campaign, MTN Côte d’Ivoire will distribute boxes to collect e-waste to companies. In addition, it will place boxes in agencies and shopping centres, where individuals would be allowed to drop their end-of-life electronics. The accepted devices include small household appliances, fixed or mobile phones, tablets, chargers and telephone batteries.

The campaign will run for a period of four months. The collected electronic and electrical devices will be transformed for reuse. Incidentally, rough estimates indicate that the country produces 9,000 tonnes of electronic waste per year on average.

Earlier in 2016, MTN had initiated a similar campaign, which in turn collected and recycled nearly 72 tonnes of e-waste. It had launched another campaign in February last year. The supermarket chain Promusa had also become part of the campaign along with e-waste recycler Ewa-Paganetti.
