The proposed tariffs will disrupt the essential flow of mineral and metal resources, he added.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): In reaction to U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to put tariffs on all Canadian goods imported into the United States, the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) released a statement.
The Association's President and CEO, Pierre Gratton, stated in a statement that Canada has traditionally been a significant exporter of metals and minerals to the United States. In 2022, the United States imported around $80 billion worth of minerals from Canada, which accounted for almost 52% of Canada's mineral exports. It is against American economic and national security interests to impose tariffs on Canadian metal and mineral products. The vital flow of metal and mineral resources will be disrupted by the planned tariffs, he continued.
Members of MAC create metal and mineral products that are traded internationally. As a result of the tariffs, Canada's mining industry will be looking for new markets and strengthening its relationships with current ones. According to MAC, this will also lead to mining facilities looking for other sources of the inputs they need to continue operating, which will negatively impact American companies.
The statement called on the Canadian government to review intricate, costly, and time-consuming regulatory procedures, eliminate internal trade barriers, and amend anticompetitive tax laws.
