Miners Trapped in Chinese Gold Mine Battle for Life

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest update provided by the Chinese state media says that 12 out of 22 workers trapped underground in the Chinese mine following an explosion are alive. However, there has been no update regarding the remaining 10 workers.

An explosion, at the mine is owned by Shandong Wucailong Investment Co Ltd near the Qixia city, located in the eastern Shandong province had damaged the exit and communication system.

The Chinese authorities have sent rescuers to the mine. Hundreds of rescuers are continuing their efforts to save the life of trapped workers, by drilling a new shaft to reach the chambers where the workers are trapped. A note passed through a rescue shaft indicates that four of the workers are injured and that the lack of fresh air and inflow of water into the chamber have further deteriorated the condition.

The managers of the operation have been detained, following their failure to report the accident for more than a day.

The country has a poor track record when it comes to mining activities, with mining accidents becoming quite common. Earlier in September 2020, a coal mine in southwestern China had reported 16 worker deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning. Also, in December, 23 miners succumbed to death, after being trapped in a coal mine. Although frequency of accidents has reduced during recent times, the mining industry in the country is often cited for not following necessary safety protocols.
