US Steel Clairton Plant Explosion Killed Two People

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Around 10.30 a.m. on Monday, there was a massive and deafening explosion at the US Steel Clairton Coke Work site outside Pittsburgh, followed by a thick smoke plume. According to initial indications, two persons have been killed. At least ten others have been hurt. The wounded workers were taken to nearby medical facilities.

In the wake of the explosion, people have reportedly been asked to avoid the area by staying inside and keeping their windows closed to give emergency personnel time to work. The Allegheny County Health Department stated that the issue is being closely watched and that it is in continuous communication with emergency personnel.

According to USW District 10 Director Bernie Hall, many workers received medical assistance from occupational health and safety specialists who were on the scene right after. Although the extent of the injuries is unknown, sources indicate that many of them are not life-threatening.

Over the previous ten years, up to 266 serious injuries have been reported at steel mills, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Additionally, Pennsylvania has the most injury reports.

According to the company's authorities, the incident included at least two Coke oven batteries. According to a US Steel executive, both batteries have been turned off.
