Liberty Steel Plant in Georgetown Facing Lawsuit over Unpaid Electric Service

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Santee Cooper is suing the company that operates the Georgetown steel mill for $7 million in unpaid electric service and a contract termination.

The lawsuit against Liberty Steel Georgetown seeks unpaid electric balances of $167,280.50 for November and $166,942.56 for December as well as a $6.6 million contract termination fee for electric service at the Liberty Steel mill, which the suit states went idle and closed in 2024.

Santee Cooper said in court documents filed last Thursday that it terminated the plant’s service in January after the two months of missed payments and multiple emails and telephone calls about the past-due balance.

The lawsuit also seeks additional damages and attorney fees.

Liberty Steel Georgetown has not yet responded to the lawsuit.
