LatAm Steel Association Member to Boost Efforts to Promote Circularity

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Aceros AZA, member of the Latin American Steel Association (Alacero), joined efforts to promote circularity in Chile. The Ministry of Environment and SOFOA had recently launched new strategy to promote the circularity of secondary industrial and mining products at the Aceros plant.

The public-private initiative will allow development of instruments to enable the use of 8.6 million tons of waste, which currently ends up in disposal sites. The collaboration agreement aims to replicate in Chile the practices followed in developed countries, by which residues can be recognized as raw materials for various production processes.

According to Marcelo Fernandez, the Undersecretary of the Environment, the agreement is an action within the framework of the Roadmap for the National Circular Economy to 2040. The efforts will help to advance a circular economy for the industrial sector, by activating recovery of industrial waste, he added.

The efficient use of materials that are discarded today will reduce more than 94 million tons of carbon dioxide per year. The strategy seeks to ensure that materials including steel slag, copper slag, fly ash, plant sludge of sewage treatment, crushed asphalt and organic waste are used systematically in the economy.
