Kobe Steel Launched New Range of Low Carbon Steel Products

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading Japanese steelmaker Kobe Steel announced launch of a new range of steel products made using an innovative technology that promises significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. The launch of ‘Kobenable Steel’, as the company calls it, will make Kobe Steel the country’s first manufacturer of low carbon dioxide blast furnace steel products.

The steelmaker claimed that the novel process will lead to substantial reduction of carbon dioxide emissions during the blast furnace ironmaking process. It must be noted that Kobe Steel had announced its CO2 Reduction Solution for Blast Furnace Ironmaking in February last year. The trial project was successfully run at the company’s Kakogawa Works, where large volumes of HBI were produced using the Midrex process. Kobenable Steel products will be rolled out to the market this fiscal year itself.

The low carbon dioxide blast furnace steel will be launched in two product categories. The product will be manufactured using the conventional blast furnace processes and will be made available for all steel products manufactured at its Kakogawa Works and Kobe Wire Rod & Bar Plant. Also, the conventional blast furnace steel products will be made available for special steel wire rods and ultra-high-tensile strength steel.
