Kenya Demands Swift Action on Global Plastics Treaty

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Kenya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mission to the United Nations Office and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), H.E. Ambassador Ababu Namwamba, called for swift action to ensure a worldwide agreement on reducing plastic pollution.

Speaking at a recent meeting, he noted that there still doesn't seem to be any definitive agreement reached by the world. Plastic pollution is getting out of hand, he said. Approximately 430 million tonnes of plastic products are produced annually, most of which are not appropriately gathered and recycled. The proposed convention might help address the growing amount of plastic trash, which would assist restore global ecosystems and lessen the major health hazards that plastics provide.

Making sure the treaty is implementable, effective, and inclusive should be the top priority for the world's states in order to come to an agreement on its fundamental components. The most recent draft did not include the nation's suggestions for the treaty's secretariat. In order to be taken into account in further negotiations, he pleaded with the chair to reinstate them.

In order to assist create an ambitious deal capable of addressing the world's plastic pollution, Ambassador Namwamba reaffirmed the nation's determination to remain cooperative in the next negotiations.
