ISA Calls for Urgent Ramp-Up of Steel Sector Logistics Facilities

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Indian Steel Association (ISA) has highlighted the need to boost logistics arrangements for the domestic steel sector. The logistics management continues to be a costly and challenging concern for majority of steelmakers in the country, said Bhaskar Chatterjee, Secretary-General, ISA.

Speaking at the Indian Steel Markets Conference 2021 organised by mjunction- a joint venture between Tata Steel and Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Ltd, noted that the new initiatives announced in the Union Budget 2021-’22 is likely to support steel production as well as consumption in India. Correspondingly, there is an urgent need for improvement of logistics capabilities to ensure smooth transportation of raw materials to steel mills and finished steel to end-markets, he said.

ISA called upon the government to take urgent action to improve the physical infrastructure within the country, especially the Indian Railways- which has been the preferred mode of transportation for the steel industry. This is essential, especially because the country targets to double its steel production over the next decade. As per estimates, around 3 tonnes of raw materials, such as iron ore and coal, need to be transported for producing every single tonne of steel, he cited.
