SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): International Paper (IP) - a global leader in sustainable packaging solutions announced a series of key strategic changes to support business growth in the North American region. This includes exit from molded fiber market and sales of selected Mexico sites.
According to a company news release, the company has made the decision to support its packaging business by converting the Reno, Nevada facility and leaving the molded fiber sector. It has made the decision to shut down its recycling facility in Wichita, Kansas, and its packaging factory in Marion, Ohio. Acabados de Papeles Santinados y Absorbentes (APSA) will also purchase the containerboard mill in Xalapa, Mexico, together with its recycling facilities in Xalapa and Apodaca, Mexico.

About 110 hourly workers and 24 salaried employees in the United States are anticipated to be impacted by the proposed changes. Through internal opportunities, retirements, and job placement in open positions, the corporation has pledged to lessen the impact. Where feasible, severance and outplacement assistance will also be given to the impacted staff members. According to the press release, ASPA will continue to employ its present onsite staff at the purchased sites.
These choices are never simple due to the effects they have on the company's workers, their families, and the communities, said Tom Hamic, executive vice president and head of IP's Packaging Solutions North America division.
