Interfor Declared Investment in Ontario and Quebec Sawmills

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Following the recent acquisition of EACOM Timber Corporation, Interfor Corporation has announced its decision to invest in sawmills in the Ontario and Quebec regions.

The company committed an investment of $4.8 million towards enhancement of nine mills in the region, including those in Timmins and Gogama. The individual mill managers will have the authority to decide on how to spend the allocated money.

Accordingly, the mills in Timmins and Gogama will each receive anywhere less than $1 million in discretionary capital funding. It must be noted that Timmins had recently received funding for repair works following the fire incident which took place during the second week of February.

Interfor plans to resume the Timmins sawmill on single shift. The planer mill, which was damaged by the fire, will resume operations by end-April. There will be no layoffs, as the staff from the second shift will be kept busy, working on mill improvements during the interim period of single-shift operation.

Meantime, Eric Larouche, Senior Vice President of Operations- Eastern Canada noted that the money could be spent on safety projects, on improving offices, lunchrooms, change rooms or locker rooms. There is a strong need to expand and get more diversified over the next few years in creating a better working environment, he added.
