SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The world crude steel production by 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) totalled 174.4 million tonnes (Mt) in May this year, higher by 16.5% compared to the same month a year before.

The largest steel producing region was the Asia and Oceania, whose output totalled 128.4 Mt in May this year. The second largest producer was the EU-27 region, with an output of 13.5 Mt. In third place was North America, which recorded an output of 10.1 Mt. The output (in Mt) by the other regions is as follows: Africa (1.3), CIS (9.1), Other Europe (4.2), Middle East (3.7) and South America (3.9).

All regions recorded year-on-year surge in crude steel output. The Asia and Oceania region’s crude steel production skyrocketed by almost 617% year-on-year. The production by EU-27 region was up by 64.4%. The North American and CIS regions recorded surge in output by 48.4% and 44.3% respectively. Other Europe too saw significant jump in output by 20.9%. The South American region saw its output increase by 18.7% over the previous year. The Middle East output was up by 17.8% year-on-year. Meantime, the African production recorded 6.5% surge.

The topmost steel producing country was China, with an output of 99.5 Mt in May 2021. The other key producers were India (9.2 Mt) and Japan (8.4 Mt).
