Export Value of Logs and Lumber Skyrocketed 63%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The export value of logs and lumber by Germany surged higher significantly by 63% over the past five years to touch 2.5 billion dollars in 2020, said the most recent Wood Resources Quarterly (WRQ) report published by the Wood Resources International (WRI).

According to WRQ, the country has harvested 6-7 million m3 of hardwood species per annum on an average for the past five years. It expects that Germany’s total timber harvest in 2020 will be the highest since 2007. Also, the softwood timber harvest in Germany is likely to reach almost 50 million m3 in 2020.

WRQ Reveals Extreme Volatility in German Log Market

The log export volumes by Germany have increased dramatically over the past several years, thus making the country a net exporter of logs. WRQ foresees log exports at around 6 million m3 in 2020. The lumber exports from the country too have increased notably, but more modest than the spectacular surge in log exports. The country’s estimated lumber exports totalled 9.5 million m3, higher by 6% from the previous year.

The collective value of German softwood log and lumber exports has surged by 63% over the past five years from 1.5 billion Euros in 2016 to just over 2.5 billion Euros in 2020. The largest export market for logs exported from Germany was China, accounting for more than 65% of the total export value in 2020. The other major destinations were Austria and Belgium.
