EU-28 Crude Steel Output Rebounded Strongly

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly crude steel production data published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) suggests notable jump in steel output by the EU-28 countries during December last year. The regional production edged higher by 10.2% over the previous year to total 11.757 million tonnes (Mt).

Germany, the largest producer in the region, recorded 10.6% jump in output over the previous year. The country’s output totalled 3.137 Mt. The Italian output too was up by 6.9% year-on-year from 1.404 Mt to 1.500 Mt in December ‘20. The other key producers during the month were France (1.155 Mt), Spain (891,000 % of Asiatonnes) and the UK (710,000 tonnes).

The steel production by Croatia surged the most, by more than doubling over the year. On the other hand, largest production decline was reported by Hungary, whose output tumbled by nearly 45% in comparison with the previous year.

Meantime, the combined steel output by EU-28 countries during the entire year 2020 was down significantly by 11.8%. The 2020 production totalled 138.786 Mt, as compared with the production of 157.298 Mt during 2019. The top five producers during this period were Germany (35.658 Mt), Italy (20.200 Mt), France (11.596 Mt), Spain (10.934 Mt) and Poland (7.890 Mt).

The pace of European steel production growth exceeded the global year-on-year growth rate of 5.8%, worldsteel data said.
