EU-28 Countries Witnessed Notable Slump in Crude Steel Output

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The European crude steel production recorded substantial decline in the month of October this year. The regional steel output totalled 12.610 million tonnes (Mt) during the month, as reported by the World Steel Association (worldsteel). This is lower by 5.6% when matched with the output of 13.356 Mt recorded in the same month a year before.

The top five steel producing countries in the region were Germany, Italy, Spain, France and Poland. The combined production by the above five countries totalled 8.334 Mt, accounting for more than 66% of the total regional output. The leading steel producer in the region was Germany, whose output totalled 3.417 Mt of steel during the month. The German production climbed higher marginally by 3.1% over the previous year.

Italy, the second largest regional steel producer, reported modest decline in steel output during the month. The Italian production totalled 2.119 Mt, down by 4.6% over the previous year. In third place was Spain, whose output recorded 7.7% year-on-year decline at 1.113 Mt. Spain and Poland reported year-on-year decline in production by 7.7% and 18% respectively.

The EU-28 crude steel production totalled 78.361 Mt during the initial ten-month period of 2020. Over this period, all countries in the region, except Greece, recorded reduced output. The top three steel producers during this period were Germany, Italy and France.
