EU-28 Countries' Crude Steel Output Dipped Considerably

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The European crude steel production recorded substantial decline in the month of August this year. The regional steel output totalled 9.315 million tonnes (Mt) during the month, as reported by the World Steel Association (worldsteel). This is lower by 16.6% when matched with the output of 11.173 Mt recorded in the same month a year before.

The top five steel producing countries in the region were Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Poland in that order. The above five countries together produced 5.787 Mt of steel, accounting for more than 62% of the total regional output. The leading steel producer in the region was Germany, whose output totalled 2.830 Mt of steel during the month. The German production dropped significantly by 13.4% over the previous year. On the contrary, Italy reported modest increase in steel output during the month. The Italian production totalled 939,000 tonnes, edging higher by 9.7% over the previous year. France, Spain and Poland reported notable year-on-year decline in production.

The EU-28 crude steel production totalled 88.006 Mt during the initial eight months of the current year. This compares with 108.131 Mt of steel production during the corresponding eight-month period in 2019. Over the year, the steel production recorded 18.6% decline. Germany, Italy and France continued to remain as the top three producers.
