Escondida Copper Mine Union Workers Declare Tool Down Strike

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The unionized workers at BHP’s Escondida copper mine in Chile will hold a 24-hours long strike, in support of the ongoing massive protests against increased fare for using public transportation.

The statement released by Union No.1, which represents nearly 2,500 mineworkers, called upon miners across the country to join the labour action, so as to paralyze all mining in the country until complete withdrawal of military forces from the streets. CTMIN, the joint group of unions and mining federations too has called for a general mining strike on October 23rd, sources said.

The planned stoppage will impact copper supply from the world’s largest copper mine.

It must be noted that the ongoing violent clashes between authorities and protestors has resulted in death of at least eight and arrests of hundreds.
