Erie County Glass Recycling Pilot Touted a Huge Success

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The drop-off pilot glass recycling program led by a public-private partnership is reportedly turning out to be a huge success in Erie County, Pennsylvania.
The program, developed by Erie-based Prism Recycling, is being supported by the Erie County Recycling program, the Erie Area Council of Governments, CAP Glass Recycling and the Glass Recycling Foundation. It must be noted that Erie County’s single-stream recycling program had stopped collecting glass in 2018.

The overall management and co-ordination of the pilot project is being done by Prism Recycling. The company has also spent approximately $77,000 in purchasing custom-fabricated recycler drop-off boxes. The company also received grant of $10,000 each from the Erie County government and the Glass Recycling Foundation. The promotional help for the project was provided by the Erie County Recycling Program and the Erie Area Council of Governments.
The drop-off boxes accept clean and empty glass bottles and jars from customers. The pilot uses the services of a local hauler to transfer the collected glass materials to concrete bunkers in SB3 Industrial Park. These are then picked up by Cap Glass Recycling- a regional glass processor.
